As a Refueling Senior Reactor Operator and Fuel Handling Supervisor, I have worked with Dave Burgstaler at Indian Point during at least the last dozen refueling outages – approximately fifteen years. In that time, Dave has become the foremost industry expert in the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of nuclear fuel transfer systems, manipulator cranes and other fuel handling equipment. Due to his unequaled knowledge of these systems and his excellent supervisory skills, Dave is typically placed in charge of the fuel handling equipment vendor technicians. As such, Dave is responsible for the pre-outage preparations, procedures, parts and all outage related monitoring and maintenance of the fuel transfer system. The Indian Point refueling organization has the utmost confidence in Dave’s ability to prepare and maintain the fuel transfer system in the condition required to stay on or ahead of our critical path schedule. Simply put, Dave’s expertise in this area cannot be matched in the nuclear power industry – period.

Safety Conscious – Excellent Services – Reliable- Diligent workforce – Customer Satisfaction – Loyal
Dave Burgstaler and his company Northern Automation have been servicing Indian Point for nearly 15 years with an outstanding track record for equipment operation and reliability. Dave’s has performed numerous tasks from Refueling to Wet Transfer /Dry Cask services. His knowledge of cranes, fuel transfer systems and nuclear fuel is bar none the best in the industry. He has taken Indian Point to the next level with his performance and upkeep of equipment to help IPEC reach 18-19 day outage performance. In the picture below was instrumental in helping IPEC go to the next level and assist with the implementation of a new process “Wet Transfer”. This was never done before at any nuclear site in the United States.
Northern Automation’s ownership was evident by the engagement and ownership of supervision and technicians during the development and implementation phases of the Wet Transfer Project and Refueling Outages.
Northern Automation’s “training to improve performance” was phenomenal which was evident in the operation of Spent Fuel Handling Machine (SFHM). There was significant improvement in operations of the Manipulator Crane and SFHM system from previous campaigns. Also included in the “training to improve performance” was the training given on the Spent Fuel Handling Machine. This was noted by little or no down time with respect to the operation of both cranes, again a significant improvement from previous loading campaigns.
